We performed a neurologic examination of a population with high levels of lead exposure, to assess the prevalence of neurologic disorders and their associations with exposure, and to determine the prevalence of previously undescribed neurologic disorders in an area where lead exposure has been minimized by health and industrial actions. Screening with the 10-minute version of the Mini-Mental Status Examination was performed in a population aged 60 years or older living in the Montreal metropolitan area. Results were correlated with exposure to lead. Twenty-eight thousand eight hundred three subjects were examined. Only 4.2% of subjects screened positive for neurologic disorders. The prevalence of neurologic disorders was estimated to be 0.74% for major neurologic disorders and 0.12% for minor neurologic disorders. Of major neurologic disorders, 15% were dementia, 12% were neuropathies, and 10% were migraine. Four percent of the subjects had multiple neurologic disorders, whereas 2.8% had a neurologic disorder associated with lead poisoning. The prevalence of previously undescribed neurologic disorders was calculated as 0.13%. The prevalence of neurologic disorders was 0.74%, and the prevalence of previously undescribed neurologic disorders was 0.13%. The high prevalence of neurologic disorders in our study population suggests that screening with the 10-minute version of the Mini-Mental Status Examination may be useful in detecting persons with neurologic disorders. be359ba680
